A New Year a New Blog!

Un año  nuevo,

un nuevo blog!

Here it goes! The start of a new blog and hopefully something really exciting. I hope this new blog makes me go ahead and post everything I love about my British/Peruvian and Sri Lankan identity!
It turns you into a different person to know that despite how far you are away from your actual true home, you are never far from making a home in another place.
This rings (and sings) true when I think of myself, a Sri Lankan-born British representative of her Majesty the Queen in Peru, an amazing country with great culture, cuisine and la gente (people!).
Never would I ever thought of making Peru my home and loving it.
Expat life would always have its ups and downs but we never get ourselves worked up about it!
So hence, I bring you my adventures of Peru through my eyes and our trips back home to London and to my home home in Sri Lanka.

Firstly, I want to talk about the New Year or as the Peruvians say Ano Nuevo!
We, of course, were in the amazing county of Gloucester, celebrating the New Year with the in-laws and my BIL. And yes, he is still single and on the lookout for an Eastern European beauty...!
My baby J, loved it. Even though it was freezing outside, he still loved it!
Which is crazy for Peru (or even SL for that matter) which is so hot and humid!
Christmas was quite quiet but we did get a chance to meet a new member of the family.
My SIL gave birth to an amazing baby boy and he is so cute!
His older brother A is much bigger now and obviously, more the handful than he already is.

We went up to Edinburgh, blistering cold, seriously, it was like the North Pole. My A´s cheeks have a permanent red ´cold´blush which is testament to the freezing ´bajo cero´temperaturas Scotland offers!
All the same, we enjoyed it, and stopped briefly at this really nice hotel called Penny Street Bridge in Lancaster to take a break. My tripadvisor review (highly commended) is here.

Thereafter it was a nice few days back in the tranquilo lugar and came back to Peru.

However, January was a nice start to the year! We went to the beach in Asia (like the Sri Lankan version of Unawatuna) but in this case, the residences around the beach (or facing it) are all owned by rich upper class or upper-middle class families. Which is quite a shocker as they have all these rules about when their maids and butlers should swim and at what time. And who pays what, etc.
Also, if it wasn´t for my ´gringo´ husband, a Sri Lankan like me wouldn´t be allowed on the beach.
Not that they were discriminatory (they might have been) but they would just shrug their shoulders and announce that rules were rules and that nobody followed them were such fools..!

Also, I am shocked by this Latin attitude towards women (obviously) but young girls...?
Seriously, you get all these pre-pubescent girls running around in next-to-nothing and they don´t even look ´womanly´! You could put our white Sri Lankan boys in wigs, some makeup and dress them in bikinis and you couldn´t tell the difference of them to these Peruvian teen girls!
I know it´s a Latin American country but as a parent myself and if I had a daughter, I would expect her to fully enjoy her childhood and once everything ´came out´ would I allow her to wear reasonably womanly dresses and swimsuits. I wouldn´t dare permit her to wear skimpy outfits anywhere!
Now this brings me to the fact of fathers, I mean would they tell their daughters that? Would they prefer it? I have no idea, I might have to interview them....! Well not!

Anyway the next post, I´ll talk about our amazing and incredible trip to the Norte de Peru! Ciao for now! x
